Project description

SOrBet (FP7 MC-IAPP, project no. 612361) is a 48 month Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) project which started in January 2014, and is funded by the European Union under Call FP7-PEOPLE-2013-IAPP in FP7.

State of the art solutions in BMS control such devices based on pre-set or customized rules, so that that there is need for actual human intervention (and errors) for setting new rules and configuring new devices. This is typically done in a highly centralized way. Recently have been considerations for remote management via mobile applications. Still, this centralized nature of control in state-of the art solutions imposes significant limitations, not only due to the introduction of a single point of failure: Poor design and installation need for human intervention to configure new devices proprietary technology, and limited consideration for wireless communication security, are only a few of the issues of current systems. As a result the embedded “smartness” of the deployed objects is not actually utilized.

SOrBet aims towards highly distributed, self-organizing, self-managing, wirelessly communicating Smart-Objects, enabling the robust management of energy efficient Smart Buildings. In doing so, drawbacks of current systems will be used as starting points in developing a framework based on the concept of “reliability by design”. Drawing lessons from the Internet of Things (IoT) will work towards realizing the concept of “reliability” in intelligent buildings and mitigating the issues mentioned above.

In addition to R&D, SOrBet contributes to competitiveness development in the European Research Area (ERA) by training researchers. A strong knowledge transfer program is designed on a mutual-benefit basis between the academics and industrial partner, to promote new career opportunities and development in the European Information and Communication technologies (ICT) arena, and thereby generate new types of expertise and human capital for ERA.
